When corresponding with guests prior to their visit to the Lodge, I’m often asked, “What lures should we bring for big Lakers?” We all have a favorite and at Rutledge we definitely have ours.
In 2005, I made an inquiry with a charter company regarding a cabin in northern Saskatchewan. They suggested I contact Rutledge Lake Lodge in the NWT as it was for sale. My interest was immediate as my very first fly-in fishing trip was to Rutledge Lake Lodge in 1980 or 81! I made arrangements with the owner Bob McMeekon and then his son Dean, to spend a week there in the spring of 2006. Dean put us on to a few of his favorite hot spots and his friend Andy introduced us to the Rhys Davis Teaser!
The bait’s head is placed in the plastic bait head and pinned with a toothpick. The treble hook is set behind the dorsal fin and by holding the plastic bait head and pulling on the leader, the desired curvature is achieved.
The action was incredible and needless to say our package of bait didn’t last long. As Dean and Andy could only spend the weekend with us, we were on our own for the rest of the week. We continued to enjoy success using an assortment of lures but couldn’t replicate the incredible action the teasers had provided earlier in the trip.
When I returned home, I contacted Tom Davis of Rhys Davis Lures and purchased several cases of teasers in an assortment of colors. We continue to enjoy incredible action using teasers and are our preferred lure for Lakers.
